Arab in America - Toufic El Rassi I must admit that I really did not connect with this text as much as I have had with the others in this genre. The novel seemed to read more as a personal rant or argument than as an actual novel. There were various pages that I really liked more for the artwork than what was written and the pages of pure text, when interspersed among all of the images seemed to drag me down and take away from what was being read. The content itself was not lacking but the way it was presented was both confusing and, in some ways, incomplete. This left me without any sort of emotional response to the text.
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic - Alison Bechdel Fun Home seems to capture the complexity of life itself in its pages as it draws the reader along. The very layout of the novel with its various sections that are not quite chronological seem to mirror the way that remembrance does not always follow the path of time. There were also various places in the novel where the author springs various ideas on the reader without provocation or anything in the context to show that such a thing was coming. There was the scene at the church where the author causally asks "But would an ideal husband have sex with teenage boys?" Then again with the third chapter where we are introduced to the main character's sexuality on the idea that it was a farce only to later learn it was truth. The entire novel is full of moments like these and in a way the labels on the pictures of the various items in the house mirror this in their non-sequitoriality.
SPOILER ALERT!
The Silence of Our Friends - Mark Long, Jim Demonakos, Nate Powell This book was both a joy and a hardship to read. The artwork is beautiful but what they reveal of the past is horrific. The artist's subtle use of black and white backgrounds is masterful and drives home the stark reality of that time period.
The reader can find oneself reeling from the truths revealed through the storyline and when one reads the afterward to find that it is based upon a true person and true events...
Learn to Tie a Tie with the Rabbit and the Fox: Story and Instructional Song - Sybrina Publishing & Distribution I am so thankful for Goodreads First Reads for allowing me to get this book. I have not yet had a chance to read it but once I do I will be sure to update this review.
The Awakening - Kate Chopin This was a difficult book to get through, despite the rather short chapter lengths. The subject matter was of a deep soulful tone and carries the reader through the awakening of Edna and drags them under with her as he comes to some important realizations.
Cave and Cosmos: Shamanic Encounters with Another Reality - Michael J. Harner I am so thankful for Goodreads First Reads for allowing me to get this book. I have not yet had a chance to read it but once I do I will be sure to update this review.
